Suru Bar

We were searching for a casual but high-quality Catalan restaurant and bar to have our last dinner in Barcelona before departing for Paris, France.

We were fortunate to have on our list Suru Bar, a restaurant with an impressive wine list, so we tried to call the restaurant and we were lucky enough to have Sergi Puig, the sommelier and co-owner of Suru on the line and he told us he had a table left for four persons.

Sergi Puig's fluency in French is a result of his experience as a sommelier in Bourgogne.

Of the wave of incredible good places that have opened in Barcelona, Suru is one of the most recent. It opened in December 2022 and with a very special name. In Catalan, “  suro ” means cork. In Japanese, it is a conjugation of the verb “ to make ” , but it also has a sensual connotation if used without conjugation.

Like its counterpart in Tokyo or Kyoto, Suru Bar is not an easy place to find. This secret restaurant and natural wine bar has a clandestine feel with no signage and only a red light bulb to mark the spot.

Suru Bar specializes in small plates to share and every dish that we ordered was very good to excellent, from the first dishes to dessert.

The wine list, as we mentioned earlier, has more than 100 options. We ordered two bottles: one white, a natural wine by Jordi Llorens called Blan 5.7, and a red wine from Montsant called Comunica "Suc de Saulo" 2022 by Pep Aguilar and Patri Morillo.

The service by Sergi and Gemma was amazing, warm, welcoming, and very instructive, and in French, s'il vous plaît.

Suru Bar was a great discovery and a wonderful place to have a great meal with friends in Barcelona.
